Sunday, May 30th, 2004~Dad made it back late Friday night and was able to spend some time with Uncle Mike and Aunt Cheryl before they returned to Louisiana Saturday afternoon. Saturday, we were able to get Tracy out on the balcony for some good stretching on the mat. Uncle Mike and Aunt Cheryl helped to get Tracy on her tummy for 20 minutes to stretch her hips, legs and back. She has gotten caught up on her tan. Tracy really enjoys stretching on the balcony and we are all going to miss Uncle Johnny's. We are very grateful to him for letting us stay in Palm Beach and we will really miss being so close to family. Saturday afternoon, Tracy, Mom and Dad went to visit Nana at the Rehab hospital. She is really getting around with her walker and looks great. Sunday, we took Tracy for a walk in her jogger and spent some time with our good friends Dr. and Mrs. Rand. It is always great to see them. Everyone please have a wonderful, safe and relaxing weekend. Everyone please have a wonderful, safe and relaxing weekend. Tracy's doctors are still trying to balance her Baclofen Pump doses and the stimulant, Amantadine. It takes some time for the brain to reorganize and adjust to these medications. It's so nice having family nearby and it really helps having visitors. We really appreciate your prayers and generosity. Please check out the following links. One includes information about spasticity and the other explains how the Baclofen Pump works.

Friday, May 28th, 2004~Tracy slept well again last night. She had therapy today at RCCA and both Donna, Tracy's OT and Rose, Tracy's PT co-treated. Today, they put Tracy on a large peanut (double balance ball) and positioned her arms on a table. Tracy did a good job holding her head up. Rose worked with Tracy's lower extremities to keep her stabilized while Donna worked with Tracy's trunk. They then transferred Tracy to a very large bolster which she straddled and then leaned her upper body on a table. While seated, Tracy looked at beautiful jewelery in a catalogue and did a good job focusing her eyes. Then Tracy had Speech therapy at the condo with Emily. She stimulated Tracy's facial muscles with a stimulator and Tracy responded well. She worked with a berry flavored candy cane to stimulate Tracy to swallow. Emily held up picture cards that our good friend Liz made for Tracy. They looked at pictures that start with the letter "B". Tracy was really trying to say "B". She is working on coordinating taking a breath, positioning her lips, and saying "Bee". Uncle Mike and Aunt Cheryl have been such a big help! They are really good cooks! Aunt Cheryl makes the best omelettes! We really miss Aunt Kathy and was glad that she could visit with us last week. She was a big help! Nana had her knee replacement surgery last Monday and is recovering well. She was transferred Thursday to the rehab hospital where she will be in therapy just like Tracy. She has been using a leg bender (CPM) machine twice a day for two hours and attending a rigorous therapy program. She is such a trooper. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Dad comes from DC this evening and we are looking forward to spending the Memorial weekend with him. Everyone please have a wonderful, safe and relaxing weekend. Tracy's doctors are still trying to balance her Baclofen Pump doses and the stimulant, Amantadine. It takes some time for the brain to reorganize and adjust to these medications. Thursday, May 27th, 2004~ Tiffany is back in DC/Virginia getting things ready for our homecoming! We miss her so much. It is not the same without her. She is the best sister and daughter that anyone could ever have and we can't wait for her to return next week. She is coming back to help us pack up and to fly back to DC with us on June 4th.

Tracy slept well last night. She had therapy today at RCCA. Donna, Tracy's OT co-treated with her ST, Rose and Tracy did an excellent job holding up her head. While sitting on the edge of the mat, Tracy was relaxed and had both feet on the floor. She was able to put weight through her left leg and foot. Rose worked with Tracy's lower extremities to keep her stabilized while Donna worked with Tracy's trunk. Tracy let Donna stretch both of her arms out by her side. Tracy responded to Uncle Mike's voice by looking at him and was able to turn her trunk in the direction of his voice with help. Tracy made several attempts during her session to talk. She tried to say "up" when she wanted Rose to help her up off the mat. Tracy had Speech at the condo this afternoon. Emily worked on stimulating Tracy's facial muscles with a stimulator and Tracy responded well. She worked with a berry flavored candy cane to stimulate Tracy to swallow. After Speech, Aunt Cheryl was able to stretch Tracy's arms and hands so that they rested on the arm rests while sitting in her wheel chair. The botox and baclofen must really be working. We really miss Aunt Kathy and was glad that she could visit with us last week. She was a big help! Nana had her knee replacement surgery last Monday and is recovering well. She was transferred today to the rehab hospital where she will be in therapy just like Tracy. She has been walking with a walker and sitting in a chair. She is such a trooper. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Dad comes from DC on Friday evening and we are looking forward to spending the Memorial weekend with him. Tracy had two good nights sleep. Aunt Cheryl has been a huge help. She is a registered nurse and has been helping with Tracy's daily care. She has been assisting Mom and Roberta stretch and range Tracy each morning. Tuesday, Aunt Cheryl, Mom, and Roberta showered Tracy. Tracy really loves her showers! Uncle Mike has also been a big help. It is great to have a strong uncle to help us with the heavy stuff. He even cooked his famous hamburgers Wednesday night. I know Tracy is looking forward to the day when she can have one too. Tracy had speech on Monday with Emily at the condo and is moving her tongue and lips much better. Emily had her taste a candy cane to stimulate Tracy's taste buds and Tracy was able to initiate a swallow. The strong minty taste surprised Tracy! Tracy did not have therapy on Tuesday. We took her to see Dr. Lochner, Tracy physiatrist. He was very pleased with Tracy's response to the Baclofen and increased her Amantadine (stimulant). He also increased her Baclofen level. Wednesday, Tracy had OT with Donna. She was a little sleepy due to the increase in Baclofen, but was still able to sit up well on the edge of the mat. Donna was also pleased with Tracy's range of motion in her upper body. Tracy had PT with Rose and she had her put weight through her legs and feet by having her lean forward in her wheelchair. She again was sleepy, but was able to hold her head up some. We really miss Aunt Kathy and was glad that she could visit with us last week. She was a big help! Nana had her knee replacement surgery last Monday and is recovering well. She was up ambulating today in the halls. She is such a trooper. Please continue to keep her in your prayers. Dad comes from DC on Friday evening and we are looking forward to spending the Memorial weekend with him. Everyone please have a wonderful, safe and relaxing weekend. Monday, May 24th, 2004~ Tracy slept well last night and is ready to start her day. Mom and Roberta, our nursing aide, stretched and ranged Tracy this morning. She is having speech therapy today with Emily here at the condo. Uncle Mike and Aunt Cheryl arrive this afternoon from Louisiana and are staying until Saturday. I leave this morning for DC, but will be coming back next Monday. Tracy had tons of visitors this weekend! Dad arrived late Friday night from DC and left early this morning. Saturday, Sandy and Ed visited with us from Key West. We all went down to the pool to enjoy the Florida sun. Mom and Dad got Tracy in the pool for the first time since her hospitalization. Tracy did a great job in the pool and eventually relaxed. We also helped her sit on a lounge chair and get some sun. Tracy really enjoyed sitting in something other than her wheelchair or her bed! Aunt Kathy enjoyed the pool with us before she had to fly back to Louisiana. She was such a big help and we really appreciate all that she does for us! Saturday night, Mom, Dad, Tracy, Sandy, Ed, and I went to dinner at the Four Seasons Hotel across the street. This morning, Sandy and Ed came over to visit before heading back to Key West. We all relaxed on the balconey for most of Sunday morning and then Mom and Dad got Tracy prone on our therapy mat. Dad really stretched Tracy's legs and hips while she was on her tummy. Sandy helped Dad keep Trace stable while he stretched her. Nana, Uncle Johnny, and Aunt Diane came over Sunday afternoon and enjoyed dinner with us. Tracy loves having company and enjoys seeing everyone. Nana is having knee replacement surgery today and we ask that you all keep her in your prayers! Tracy will have therapy again this week at the RCCA. Tracy's doctors are still trying to balance her Baclofen Pump doses and the stimulant, Amantadine. She glanced over and saw something lying near a wall in an alcove by a nearby building. She went over to investigate and found a blue pair of rosary beads and a card with the Blessed Mother on it. We couldn't believe it. Who knows how she saw them or what made her look in that direction, but we feel like it's a definite sign, especially on Mother's Day! Friday, May 21st, 2004~Tracy has been going to sleep late, but sleeping well. Trace has a doctor's appointment today and two therapy sessions at the RCCA. Aunt Kathy and Uncle Johnny are going with us today to Tracy's appointments. Dad gets in late this evening from DC and we can't wait to see him. Yesterday, Tracy had a GREAT day of therapy. She was awake during all sessions and was very cooperative. Tracy had PT first with Rose and Rose was very happy with Tracy's tone. She thinks the baclofen pump is working really well and was able to stretch Tracy's legs and feet more easily. During speech, Tracy was wide-eyed and made many sounds for Emily. Emily showed Tracy pictures and asked her various questions. During OT, Donna got Tracy on the rehab mat and helped her sit up. Tracy's arms relaxed to her side and Tracy sat up really well. Thursday evening, Tracy had a much-needed massage with Lisa. Tracy relaxed for Lisa and was extremely trusting. Lisa was amazed with the difference in Tracy's muscles and is very happy with her progress. Tracy's friends from U of Miami, Nicole and Aubrey, are visiting for a bit today before they move to NYC. Also, our dear friend, Sandy is coming up from Key West for the weekend. It's so great having visitors! In other news, on Sunday, Mother's Day, while we were walking to our normal spot in the garden, Mom stopped to put Tracy's sunglasses on. She glanced over and saw something lying near a wall in an alcove by a nearby building. She went over to investigate and found a blue pair of rosary beads and a card with the Blessed Mother on it. Wednesday, May 19th, 2004~Tracy slept well last night and we had a very nice day today. After getting Tracy ready for the day this morning, we let her relax a bit. This afternoon, Aunt Kathy, Mom, Tracy and I went to eat lunch at Testa's in Palm Beach. We then went shopping at City Place. It's so nice being out of the hospital and it's getting easier and easier to take Trace places. Tracy has therapy again tomorrow at the RCCA. Aunt Kathy is here until Saturday night and Dad arrives Friday night from DC. Last night, Debbie Rand and Marty visited with Tracy. They are both speech therapists and very good friends of ours. Debbie brought Tracy a model yellow H2 Hummer! Tracy loves it and Debbie was very happy with Tracy's progress. Tracy focused on Debbie and mimicked sounds for her. Aunt Diane and Nana joined us for dinner last night here at the condo. It's so great having them nearby. In other news, on Sunday, Mother's Day, while we were walking to our normal spot in the garden, Mom stopped to put Tracy's sunglasses on. Tuesday, May 18th, 2004~Well, we are all settled in Palm Beach and Tracy started therapy yesterday at the RCCA. Aunt Kathy arrived last night from Louisiana and it's so nice to have her here! She arrived after a busy weekend. Her daughter (our cousin), Kathryn Jean, graduated from high school on Sunday and was the salutatorian. Congrats KJ! Tracy slept well last night and she has been relaxing today. We all sat outside on the balconey for awhile and soaked up some rays. Debbie Rand and Marty are coming by tonight to work with Tracy. They are both speech therapists and very good friends of ours. They are eager to see what Tracy can do after her long hospital stay. Dad left early Monday morning and will be back again on Friday. Yesterday at the RCCA, Tracy was really sleepy during speech with Emily. Emily asked Tracy to look at some pictures and she also examined Tracy's mouth. During OT, Donna stretched Tracy's arms and shoulders while she was sitting in the chair. She then got Tracy on the mat and helped her sit up. Donna coached Tracy to keep her head up and continued to stretch her arms and shoulders. Donna definitely thinks that the baclofen is working well and said that Tracy is much more relaxed. Monday night, Tracy had a much-needed masage. We left Jackson Memorial Hospital on Saturday after an 8-week stay. Many thanks to all of Tracy's doctors, nurses, and therapists! We really appreciated all of your help and support. In other news, on Sunday, Mother's Day, while we were walking to our normal spot in the garden, Mom stopped to put Tracy's sunglasses on. Saturday, May 15th, 2004~Congratulations U. of Miami class of 2004! We wish Tracy could have graduated with y'all, but she will join you one day! Dad arrived late Friday evening and spent the night with Tracy. She didn't sleep very well. I think she was anticipating our departure from Jackson Memorial Hospital. After two long months, we left the hospital this morning and are now settled in again at Uncle Johnny's condo in Palm Beach. It is SO nice to be here and Tracy is relaxing already. Yesterday, Tracy had her last PT and OT sessions with Aileen and Maria. Aileen checked Tracy's tone and Maria checked her hand/wrist splints. Tracy sat up realy well in her chair and held her head up without support for a good bit during therapy. Mom and I stayed at Cousin Judy and Brian's condo in Sunny Isles last night. It was so nice to sleep in an actual bed! Thanks guys for having us! Tonight, Aunt Diane and Nana are coming over for dinner. Dad will be here until Monday morning and then Aunt Kathy Sue is coming Monday evening from Louisiana. We are so glad that she is able to come and help us! Tracy will have a therapy evaluation session on Monday at the Rehab Center for Children and Adults in Palm Beach. We are so glad she is able to go back to the RCCA. In other news, on Sunday, Mother's Day, while we were walking to our normal spot in the garden, Mom stopped to put Tracy's sunglasses on. Thursday, May 13th, 2004~Tracy slept well last night, thankfully! Mom and I stayed with Tracy again and will be here until Dad arrives from DC Friday evening. We checked out of our hotel and are currently living in Tracy's hospital room! :) Always fun! Yesterday, Cousin Judy stopped by and helped us move out of our hotel room. Uncle Johnny and Chip came to pack up both of their vehicles with our stuff to take back to Palm Beach. Thank goodness for their help, because we never would have gotten all of our stuff and Tracy back to Palm Beach on Satuday! Tracy is dressed and sitting up in her wheelchair. We have already been outside to sit in the sun for a few hours and will hopefully venture out again this afternoon. Tracy is pretty relaxed and seems to be tired of the hospital. Thankfully we are taking her back to Palm Beach Saturday morning. Dad will be here this weekend and then Aunt Kathy Sue is coming Monday evening from Louisiana. We are so glad that she is able to come and help us! Tracy will have a therapy evaluation session on Monday at the Rehab Center for Children and Adults in Palm Beach. We are so glad she is able to go back to the RCCA. Tracy is wearing her new day splints that Maria made yesterday. They are really nice and should help Tracy's wrists stay in a neutral position. Tracy had PT today with Aileen in a small rehab room on the ortho-neuro floor. Aileen and Maria got Tracy on the rehab mat and worked on her sitting, posture, and head control. Tracy definitely needs to get back on a regular therapy schedule. We are looking forward to being able to get her in the pool once we are back in Palm Beach. Wednesday, May 12th, 2004~Tracy finally got some sleep last night. Mom and Tiffany have been staying with her since Monday morning. Yesterday we took Tracy outside to the garden twice. She really enjoys being in the sun. Tracy wasn't feeling well yesterday and her muscles were extremely tight. She had PT with Aileen. Aileen stretched Tracy to see how tight her muscles really were. Mom showered Tracy this morning and Uncle Johnny surprised us with a visit. Cousin Judy is coming to spend the day with us as well. Maria, Tracy's OT, is going to make some day splints for Tracy. She is fitting them today and they should be ready tomorrow. We are hoping to take Tracy back to Palm Beach Saturday! We can't wait to get back to Uncle Johnny's condo. We have been down here in Miami for 8 long weeks! We are also hoping to get Tracy back to DC as soon as she can fly. On Sunday, Mother's Day, while we were walking to our normal spot in the garden, Mom stopped to put Tracy's sunglasses on. Tracy's doctors are constantly trying to balance the Baclofen and Amantadine doses. She seems to be tolerating the increased dose of Amantidine and this is a gradual process. It takes some time for the brain to reorganize and adjust to these medications. Mom read the book A Promise Is A Promise by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, that former Lt. John Huber sent us. It is a very touching and inspirational book which she highly recommends for everyone to read. (The proceeds from this book go to help support Edwarda O'Bara, a girl who has been in a coma for 30 years.) Thank you John for sharing this priceless story with us. It's so nice having family nearby and it really helps having visitors. While Tracy is in the hospital in Miami we are staying at a hotel. Uncle Johnny is periodically bringing us our mail from Palm Beach. Again, thank you for everyone who continues to write to Tracy and send her Mass cards. We really appreciate your prayers and generosity. Please check out the following links. One includes information about spasticity and the other explains how the Baclofen Pump works.

Monday, May 10th, 2004~Happy Mom's Day! Tracy had a nice weekend here at the Jackson Memorial. Dad arrived late Friday night and stayed with Tracy both Friday and Saturday. Saturday, Dad took Tracy outside for a little sun. They went to Au Bon Pan so Dad could get some lunch. Sunday, Mom, Dad, and Tiffany took Trace outside twice. We spent a few hours lounging in the shade, enjoying the nice Florida May weather. While we were walking to our normal spot in the garden, Mom stopped to put Tracy's sunglasses on. Mom also received some beautiful flowers from Tracy for Mother's Day! Uncle Johnny, Nana, and Aunt Diane come over this evening and brought dinner for all of us to enjoy. We had a nice evening with them and they all thought that Tracy looked much better. Friday, May 7th, 2004~Uncle Johnny came down to Miami and surprised us yesterday evening. He is truly an angel and must have known that we both needed a break! He stayed with Tracy last night and they both slept well. This morning was the first time since last Friday that Tracy was sick to her stomach. Today, Tracy had PT with Pedro. He stretched and ranged Tracy's extremities in her room. She is definitely a lot more relaxed today and rested most of the day. Tiffany and Mom took Tracy outside for a couple of hours in the sun. It was a beautiful day. Dad arrives this evening, thank goodness, because we definitely need a break! She seems to be tolerating the increased dose of Amantidine, and the doctors continue to work on balancing the Baclofen and Amantidine doses. This is a gradual process and it takes some time for the brain to reorganize and adjust to these medications. Mom read the book A Promise Is A Promise by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, that former Lt. Thursday, May 6th, 2004~Mom and I stayed with Trace again last night. We have decided we are both more comfortable just sleeping here then going back to the hotel by ourself. Tracy did not sleep at all last night and she was extremely uncomfortable and tight. Of course she is fast asleep this morning! Yesterday, Tracy had physical therapy with Pedro. He brought Tracy to the little gym on the unit and positioned her on the mat. He stretched her hip flexors and lower extremities and noted that she was very tight. Trace was up in her chair for a few hours yesterday, but she just wasn't feeling that well. This morning, Tracy's baclofen pump was adjusted again. She is now up to 520 micrograms per day or 21.7 micrograms per hour. She started at 80 micrograms per day! It's definitely a balancing act! Dad arrives tomorrow, thank goodness, because we definitely need a break! Tuesday, May 4th, 2004~This is the beginning of the seventh week here at University of Miami Jackson Memorial Hospital. Tiffany and Mom stayed with Tracy last night and everyone had a good night's sleep. Tracy had a good morning in her wheel chair. During Physical Therapy, Aileen put Tracy prone for twenty minutes. She tolerated this well with no nausea or vomiting! Tracy hasn't been prone (on her tummy) for about eight weeks, so this is a big step! John Huber sent us. It is a very touching and inspirational book which she highly recommends for everyone to read. (The proceeds from this book go to help support Edwarda O'Bara, a girl who has been in a coma for 30 years.) Thank you John for sharing this priceless story with us. Dad is back in DC and we miss him already!

Monday, May 3rd, 2004~ Tiffany stayed with Tracy last night and they both slept well. Tracy spent some time in her wheelchair this morning. Drs. Nedd and Rubin came by and are discussing using Botox on Tracy's large leg muscles to help with straightening her feet. This will be in conjunction with serial casting of both feet and legs. Once this is accomplished, Physical Therapy will be able to stand Tracy up using a tilt table. We know that it will seem strange for Tracy to stand with help but it will be so good for her to put weight through her legs and feet after such a long time in a horizontal position. The casting is a very gradual process which takes weeks to accomplish. Dr. Nedd increased Tracy's Amantidine today and is still trying to balance the Baclofen and Amantidine doses. This also is a gradual process. Mom read the book A Promise Is A Promise by Dr. Wayne W. Dyer, that former Lt. John Huber sent us. It is a very touching and inspirational book which she highly recommends for everyone to read. Sunday, May 2nd, 2004~Dad stayed with Tracy both Friday and Saturday night. Tracy slept through the night Friday night, but she didn't sleep well Saturday night. Saturday, Dad got Trace in her wheelchair and took her for a walk. Dad stopped and had lunch at Au Bon Pan and let Trace enjoy a little sunshine. Today, Debbie Rand came to visit Trace and had an hour long speech session with Trace. Trace was paying attention to Debbie, but she didn't make any sounds. Tracy's good friend Sasha and Sasha's Mom came to visit as well. They gave Tracy an adorable angel bear. Aunt Diane, Nana, and Uncle Johnny also stopped by this evening to have dinner with us in Tracy's room. They brought us lots of yummy goodies to have throughout the week. Dad stretched and ranged Tracy really well the past couple of days. Unfortunately, he leaves early tomorrow morning to head back to DC. He will be back again Friday. Former Lt. John Huber sent us a very touching book this past week. Thank you John for your kind words and constant prayers! We are still having difficulty balancing the drugs so that Tracy's muscles can relax. The doctors are having Mom track Tracy's level of spasticity using the Ashworth scale. Once a trend can be established, the doctors will modify Tracy's baclofen dose to adjust to Tracy's times of high tone. The Amantidine could also be causing Tracy to get more tight at night since it acts as a stimulant. Tracy is still trying to adjust to the Amantidine, a new stimulant to help her stay focused and alert. This medication is typically used as an antiviral drug but has also been found to improve concentration. It must be working! It's so nice having family nearby and it really helps having visitors. While Tracy is in the hospital in Miami we are staying at a hotel. Uncle Johnny is periodically bringing us our mail from Palm Beach.
